What are your expectations for our class project? Compare Chris Newman and Eric Jackson’s approaches to food justice.
For this project i'm expecting it to be good for the whole class overall. i feel like as we go through and do this project, our minds will almost go to a better/more understanding place if that makes sense. i feel like we will have a better understanding of the purpose of this class and form our own interpretations of what public humanities really is. We aren't actually going to be fully hands on of course, but just sparking these ideas in our head while we plan our projects is going to make some of us actually want to go through to do a real project like this. i basically think this project is still going to have a powerful effect on our minds. i'm excited to see how things will turn out if i'm being honest and excited to see the class come full circle. Now for Chris Newman and Eric Jackson. after reading a few of his articles, chris Newman's approach seems to be running his own farm in the best way possible to him. Then he takes stories and exposes the truth about them in a way. Chris Newman's writings revolve around agriculture, food, farming. He's real with every piece and breaks down stories to each fact and false piece of information. In chris Newman's article "everything i do is racist" he breaks down the downfall of one of his favorite farmers Joel Salatin and as he goes through shows how Joel showed more racism/need to try and seem better than others which was the cause of him losing everything as a farmer. Chris Newman tries show have a moral at the end of all his stories it seems. Eric Jackson on the other hand seems to be more personal with his approach. He has his farm and everything. then he brings in his personal aspect by explaining stories like the ones about his family, specifically his grandmother which got him into everything. it doesn't seem like he focuses as much on stories about other broader people/groups like Newman does. Jackson seems like he is more in the streets rather than always being at his farm. One thing both of these guys work around is the truth and the real story about things. they are working towards a more realistic approach from what i've seen.
