What is wrong with making assumptions about people’s stories/backgrounds? How can we own our own stories?
Making assumptions about people's stories/backgrounds is really one of the ways you can worsen yourself as a person it seems. doing so never leads to anything good, it often times leads to bad things happening rather than good things. you can look at someone hanging outside the back of a gas station or store and assume that they are danger which may be true, but at the same time there is a good chance that you could have interacted with them and they could have became one of the best people you have ever met. making assumptions can lead to false narratives about people which can spread fast. You can miss out on a lot or limit your knowledge of something heavily by making assumptions. Assumptions are most times made by people that appear different but may be similar in reality. To own our own stories we have to actually take a step back and instead of listening to what other people say we should actually do our own research. Google can tell you just about anything you need or want to know. reading articles, looking at documentaries, looking at pictures, actually getting in contact with people you want to know about. All of these are options and there are plenty more that you can use to learn and form your own story, it is the most effective way because going off of what someone else says or your first perception/assumption can lead you to the wrong path in life. This is an issue all of us humans should work on because we need to make progress to better ourselves as people and it can't just be some people that do it, everyone needs to do so. A recent short story called "the fisherwoman" really captures this topic as towards the end of the story they expressed how strangers can be another version of ourselves that we may not have tapped in with yet. Hence the point why it is wrong to make assumptions because we can learn a lot about ourselves when learning about someone else.
